Maternal and Child Health Services in Poorer Countries
When it comes to maternal and child health in wealthier countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, most people take it for granted that pregnant mothers and children will have some level of health care. However, in poorer areas of the world, this is often a luxury that is never taken for granted or guaranteed. Millions of children in poor countries die annually from preventable illnesses including malaria and diarrhea. In addition, thousands of women die every year from preventable complications during pregnancy.
The goal in helping such countries is to provide funding so that doctors and other health care workers have the facilities and money available to provide care for both expecting mothers and children. In doing so, millions of deaths can easily be prevented. This preventative health care is by way of medications that can be distributed to even the poorest villages and help prevent and control diseases that claim so many lives needlessly.
Developed countries have the ability to help even its poorest citizens but this is not the case in underdeveloped countries and therefore, without funding many more mothers and children will continue dying annually. Many of the current programs in place offer volunteer or a small stipend and room and board in exchange for doctors and nurses to spend a specific amount of time in these countries to provide basic care. Most of the programs go through the country’s government so that the proper steps are handled in getting the medications to the citizens that need them most.
While many countries enjoy basic and advanced maternal and child health care, it is certainly not the case in all countries. Unnecessary deaths can easily be prevented with the proper funding and campaigns to help raise the necessary funds to provide basic care to pregnant women and children.
